Samuel Holt Travers 1807-1863

    Samuel Holt Travers was the youngest of seven children. He was born in Clerkenwell and later became a watch pinion maker in the St Helens and Rainhill area. He married Beatrice Walker (~1806-1891) at Rainford Chapel (witnessed by William and Mary Walker, her parents) on 4 Oct 1827 and they had twelve children. The original Rainford Chapel no longer exists as it was demolished in the 1800's when the current All Saints Church was built to replace it at the same location. Samuel and Beatrice moved from St Helens to Warrington Road, Rainhill in approximately 1840. By 1851 the family had moved to The Holt, Fosters Row, Rainhill. The eldest son William (1828-1897) was a watch pinion maker and son Richard (1832-1901) was also a watchmaker. Four of their other sons Thomas (1835-1874) Henry (1839-1927), Robert (1843-1898) and John Travers (1849-1937) were chronometer makers.
    Samuel and Beatrice are buried in an unmarked grave at St. Ann's Church, Rainhill along with several descendants. Samuel and Beatrice were non-conformists as their first six children, of which only three survived, were baptised in the New Chapel Independent in St Helens between 1828-1837.


Samuel Holt Travers and Beatrice (Walker) had twelve children:

  1. 1.William Travers (11 Oct 1828 - 13 Jul 1897)

  2. 2.Sarah Travers (24 Feb 1830 - 1830)
    Sarah died as an infant.

  3. 3.Richard Travers (3 Jan 1832 - 28 Apr 1901)
       On the 1851 Census, Richard lived with his grandparents William and Mary Walker in St Helens. His occupation was watch movement maker. On the 1871 Census, Richard Travers (39 years old) lived in St. Albans, Hertfordshire with his mother Beatrice Travers, brothers Thomas Travers, Robert Travers, and sister Ellen (Travers) Rennie and nieces Beatrice Rennie and Rebecca Rennie. On the 1881 Census, a Richard Travers lived on Albert Road, St. Albans. He was born at St Helens, Lancashire, Watchmaker. (Note that his age on 1881 census record inconsistent) His death was registered April 30, 1901. Vol 8b, pg 469

    Sarah died as an infant.


5. Thomas Travers (10 Jan 1835 - 3 Jan 1874)
    Thomas Travers died of tuberculosis at age 39. He is buried at St. Ann’s, Rainhill


6. Elizabeth Travers (4 Jan 1837 - 4 Apr 1838)

    Elizabeth died at Duke Street, St Helens from small pox.


  1. 7.Henry Travers (10 Apr 1839 - 21 Feb 1927)
         Henry Travers was born in St. Helens, Lancashire on April 10, 1839. He married Sarah Elizabeth Gray in 1870. Henry died in St. Albans, Hertfordshire on February 21, 1927. Sarah also died in St. Albans, Hertfordshire on August 19, 1930. They are both buried in the same grave at the Hatfield Road Cemetery, St. Albans.





  1. 8.Ellen Travers (12 Apr 1841 - 7 Feb 1899)
    Ellen married Robert Rennie on 22 Oct 1861 and they had two children Beatrice Jessie and Rebecca. Robert died and Ellen remarried George Timperley and they had three children Ellen Turner, Miriam and Henry. Ellen and George are both buried at St. Ann’s, Rainhill.

    James is buried in the same unmarked grave as his parents at St. Ann’s, Rainhill.

    David is buried in the same unmarked grave as his parents at St. Ann’s, Rainhill.
