William Travers of Rainhill

 

William Travers 1828-1897


    William Travers, son of Samuel Travers and Beatrice Walker, was born in St Helens, Lancashire on 11 Oct 1828. He was a watch pinion maker and died in Rainhill, Lancashire on 13 Jul 1897. William and his wife Ann Swift are buried at St Ann's churchyard in Rainhill along with other family members and descendants.

William and Ann had eight children.

  1. 1.Elizabeth Travers (abt 1856 - ?)
    Elizabeth married Wilfred Houghton and they had five children, Albert, Wilfred, Ada Mary, Maud and George

  2. 2.Ellen Travers (abt 1858 - 1910)
    Ellen married William Richardson Gelling and had one daughter Amy Beatrice who married Thomas Mercer.

  3. 3.William Travers (16 Apr 1864 - 13 Jul 1885)

  4. 4.Samuel Travers (22 May 1866 - 15 Nov 1939)
    William and Ann's son Samuel is also buried at St Ann's, Rainhill. He was born on Houghton Street in Rainhill on 22 Mar 1866 and died 15 Nov 1939. Samuel married Mary Ann Prescott and they had nine children.

    Beatrice married Henry Curphey and had ten children.

  2. 6.Rebecca Travers (2 Oct 1870 - ?)
    Rebecca married Herbert William E Francis who was a confectioner and they had four children Ethel, Edith Hettie, Elsie and Edwin William.

  3. 7.Ann Travers (6 Oct 1872 - 20 Feb 1875)
    Ann is buried in the family grave at St. Ann’s, Rainhill.

  4. 8.Harry Travers (4 Apr 1875 - 28 Apr 1917)
    Private Harry Travers (357722) of the Kings Liverpool Regiment was killed in France during the Great War and is mentioned in the monumental inscription. His name is also on the memorial in the churchyard as well as on a plaque inside the church.
