For interpreting dates in the 18th century it is important to note the calendar change of 1752 when England adopted the reformed Gregorian calendar. Previously, under the Julian calendar, the last day of the year was March 24th and the first day of the new year was on March 25th. In 1582 Pope Gregory XIII had a new calendar created and adopted in Catholic countries that removed 10 days from October 1582. In England, the year 1751 began on March 25 and ended on December 31, 1751 so it was a shortened year. The first month of 1752 was therefore January as it is today. Also, because of additional time lost since 1582 there was an eleven day adjustment in September 1752. September 2 was followed by September 14.
